May 2, Saturday, Yangshuo

Our hotel is right on one of the lakes and breakfast is served on a deck right beside the lake. Spectacular views of both the lake and the surrounding farms and mountains.

Can you say “Chinese Holiday”?  Well today was the second day of a four day holiday celebrating Labor.  And the Chinese see Yangshuo as a great holiday destination.  So everything was packed.

Our first stop was the Silver Cave.  It was bigger than the Reed Flute Cave in Guilin and just as colorfully lit.

Great Wall

Biggest difference – a never ending line of Chinese snaking their way through the cave (it is a holiday after all).

This cave also had lakes that gave great reflections.

Everyone was having a great time but it was just crowded.  The cave wasn’t very cold (Dave said it was 20°C) but it was humid and so we both worked up a sweat walking through the cave.

The cave exit cave dropped us off at the start of a long windy route through a large building filled with vendors selling souvenirs, snacks, Chinese herbal medicine, clothes and anything else you could imagine.

More photos of the Silver Cave.

We drove to the Moon Mountain (had a large moon shaped hole in it) for lunch at a nearby restaurant.

While eating lunch we saw a man with a fishing net go to a small pool in the middle of the restaurant’s garden and snag a fish that flopped quite vigorously in the net.  As he walked to the kitchen the bets were that a fish would be coming out of the kitchen shortly.  Sure enough, about 10 or 15 minutes later a waiter came out of the kitchen with a large plate holding a cooked and dressed fish.   They really like fresh food in China.

We then decided to go back to West Lake Street, a main tourist shopping street, to do some shopping.  Can you say “Chinese Holiday Traffic”?  It took 2+ hours to go less than 5 miles. It may have been slow moving but there was a lot to see including vendors...

and lots of flower fields.

Much of the time the two lane road contained cars, trucks and buses running four abreast, plus bicycles, motorcycles, pedestrians and other mini-vehicles on both shoulders.

West Lake Street was very crowded but we managed to find a few interesting trinkets for presents.

Plus some ice cream to help cool down in the hot humid day.  Then it was back to the traffic.  It had cleared somewhat but it was still slow going.  We did make it back to the hotel at a reasonable hour so we could pack for tomorrow’s flight and then go to dinner.
